Shipping Electric Bikes from China

Move complete electric bicycles from China with a shipment plan built around the actual bike, installed or removed battery, packing, quantity and destination—not the product name alone.

Boundary: Final classification, packing, carrier acceptance, customs treatment, price and schedule remain shipment-specific.

This page is for commercial e-bike shipments from China.

This service page is intended for manufacturers, exporters, importers, distributors, retailers and commercial buyers moving complete electric bicycles from China. Typical enquiries include:

  • factory-packed e-bikes with the propulsion battery installed;
  • e-bikes packed with the battery removed;
  • cartons or crates containing partly disassembled bicycles;
  • palletized retail or wholesale consignments;
  • e-bike samples or small commercial batches;
  • shipments that include chargers, displays, parts or separately packed spare batteries; and
  • door, port, airport or warehouse delivery requirements.

The page does not assume that every electric bicycle can use the same transport method. Battery chemistry, configuration, Watt-hour rating, condition, package, quantity, origin facility, destination and operating-party acceptance all affect the result.

Standalone replacement batteries without complete bicycles belong primarily to the broader battery shipping from China workflow. EV traction-battery packs and automotive battery assemblies should be reviewed under the dedicated EV-battery scope rather than treated as e-bikes.

Passenger baggage rules are also outside this commercial freight page. A traveller asking whether an e-bike may be carried on a flight should consult the airline’s current passenger guidance directly.

Identify what will physically move before choosing a UN entry.

“Electric bike” is a commercial description. Transport classification follows the physical article and battery configuration.

Complete e-bike with its lithium-ion battery installed

Current international provisions recognize a pedal cycle with a motor as a vehicle. Under the current modal framework, a lithium-ion-powered vehicle transported with its battery installed is commonly reviewed under UN 3556, Vehicle, lithium ion battery powered.

The IMDG Code amendments expressly include bicycles—pedal cycles with a motor—among examples of vehicles and apply UN 3556 to lithium-ion-battery-powered vehicles transported with the batteries installed. The IATA 2026 battery guidance also lists UN 3556 for lithium-ion-battery-powered vehicles under Packing Instruction 952.

This is a classification starting point, not an automatic booking approval. The responsible party must confirm the actual design, battery installation, condition, mode and current applicable provisions.

National regulations and transitional provisions can differ, so the origin, transit and destination requirements must also be checked for the proposed route.

Battery removed from the e-bike

Removing the battery changes the physical shipment. Do not continue describing the consignment as though the battery were installed in the vehicle.

The removed battery may require a separate lithium-battery entry and package treatment. Whether a particular arrangement is treated as a battery packed with equipment, a standalone battery, or another configuration must be confirmed against the current modal rules and the exact packing pattern. Photographs should show where the battery is placed, how it is protected and whether it shares an outer package with the bicycle.

For the distinction between batteries shipped alone and batteries packed with or contained in equipment, see UN 3480 vs UN 3481. Do not assume that a vehicle automatically becomes ordinary “equipment” merely because its battery has been removed.

Spare batteries included with an e-bike

A spare battery is not the installed propulsion battery. It must be declared and prepared according to the provisions that apply to the spare battery and packing arrangement.

IATA’s 2026 guidance gives a specific example in which a UN 3556 vehicle and spare lithium-ion batteries are declared separately within an authorized combination or overpack. This illustrates why the complete packing pattern must be reviewed rather than described as one generic e-bike carton.

Other chemistries and hybrid products

Most commercial e-bike enquiries involve rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, including products marketed with particular lithium-ion chemistries. Do not apply UN 3556 or lithium-ion provisions until the chemistry is confirmed.

Products using sodium-ion, lithium-metal, wet batteries, fuel or another power source require a different starting review. A hybrid or modified vehicle can also introduce hazards not covered by the ordinary e-bike description.

Build one e-bike shipment record.

A quotation based only on “100 electric bikes” is not reliable. Prepare one record that connects the product, battery, package and route.

If several models, battery ratings or packing patterns are included, list each separately. Do not average their weights, ratings or dimensions into one generic line.

Documents support the review; they do not guarantee acceptance.

The exact document set depends on the e-bike, battery configuration, mode, origin, destination and operating parties.

UN 38.3 test-summary information

Lithium cells and batteries offered for transport generally must be of a type that has passed the applicable tests in Part III, subsection 38.3 of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria. Manufacturers and subsequent distributors must make the applicable test summary available for batteries and battery-powered equipment covered by the requirement.

The test summary should match the battery design installed in or supplied with the e-bike. A summary for another manufacturer, cell, model or battery assembly may not support the cargo.

A UN 38.3 test summary is not a universal shipping certificate. It does not by itself determine the final UN number, prove the package complies with every applicable rule or guarantee carrier, port, customs or authority acceptance.

Battery specification and SDS

The battery specification should identify the chemistry, model, nominal voltage, rated capacity, Watt-hour rating and weight. An SDS can provide useful hazard and handling information, but it does not replace the test summary, classification review or applicable transport documentation.

Commercial and transport records

A typical commercial review may also require:

  • commercial invoice and packing list;
  • product and battery model list;
  • package, weight and dimension schedule;
  • clear packing and product photographs;
  • dangerous-goods transport information or declaration where applicable;
  • booking instructions and carrier- or terminal-specific forms;
  • export and destination customs information; and
  • consignee, importer and final-delivery details.

The manufacturer, shipper, packing party or another legally responsible party must supply or sign documents according to the applicable rules and commercial arrangement. BAT Logistics can review supplied information for logistics planning and coordinate eligible handoffs, but it does not perform UN testing, issue a UN 38.3 test summary or replace the legally responsible declarant.

Choose the transport mode after the e-bike is defined.

There is no universal best way to ship electric bikes from China. Compare modes using the same bicycle, battery, package, quantity and destination information.

Sea freight

Ocean freight is often the first option reviewed for commercial quantities, palletized cartons and heavier consignments. Depending on the route and acceptance conditions, the scope may involve FCL, eligible LCL, port-to-port freight or a wider pickup-to-delivery plan.

The IMDG Code 2024 Edition incorporating Amendment 42-24 became mandatory on 1 January 2026. A 2026 shipment should therefore be reviewed against the current provisions, not an old vehicle or lithium-battery checklist.

The sea-freight decision should consider classification, battery installation, condition, carrier and terminal acceptance, container or consolidation policy, package strength, cargo securing, weight distribution, transshipment, export-port capability and destination handling.

FCL may reduce some consolidation dependencies for a larger shipment, but it does not remove dangerous-goods, documentation or securing requirements. LCL can be considered only when the consolidator, route and complete cargo are accepted; small volume alone does not establish eligibility.

See shipping batteries by sea and LCL battery shipping for the corresponding mode decisions.

Air freight

Air freight may be reviewed for eligible samples, urgent commercial batches or routes where the complete cargo fits current aircraft and operator conditions. Urgency does not create eligibility.

For lithium-ion-battery-powered vehicles with a Watt-hour rating above 100 Wh, IATA’s 2026 guidance requires the vehicle to be offered with the battery at no more than 30% state of charge or an indicated battery capacity no greater than 25%, unless the stated approval pathway is used. This rule should be applied to the correct vehicle configuration and current booking—not copied to every battery shipment or transport mode.

The air review should also consider the installed or removed battery, spares, battery rating, unit and package weight, dimensions, quantity, package protection, dangerous-goods documentation, cargo-aircraft limitations where applicable, departure and destination airport capability, operator variations and available capacity.

See lithium battery air shipping from China for the dedicated air-service scope.

Rail or road freight

Rail or international road service may be considered for some China-origin e-bike consignments where the route, border handoffs, dangerous-goods acceptance and destination network are workable.

These services are not interchangeable with ordinary parcel or domestic road delivery. The plan may involve several carriers, terminals, customs points and modal rules. Confirm the exact route and operating parties before presenting a schedule.

Courier or express network

Courier may be considered for compact eligible consignments, but complete e-bikes often exceed network dimensions or fall outside an account’s dangerous-goods coverage. Country-level courier coverage does not prove that a specific e-bike, package or postcode is accepted.

For small commercial consignments, supply the complete carton dimensions, gross weight, battery configuration and destination postcode. See shipping lithium batteries by courier for the network-specific review.

Door-to-door coordination

A door movement can combine China pickup, warehouse handling, export processing, international freight, customs handoffs and final delivery. Each leg may have a different operating party and acceptance condition.

The quotation should state who is responsible for factory preparation, packing, declarations, export formalities, freight, destination customs, duties and taxes, delivery appointments and unloading. “Door to door” does not mean every legal or commercial responsibility transfers to one provider.

Pack the vehicle for both compliance and physical handling.

An e-bike package must control the battery hazard and protect a relatively large, damage-sensitive product through pickup, warehouse movement, loading, international transport and delivery.

Secure the battery and prevent electrical hazards

Where the battery is transported installed, it should be securely installed and protected against short circuit, damage and unintended operation according to the applicable provisions and manufacturer instructions. Controls should not activate during handling. Keys, displays or removable controls may need a defined packing position.

If the battery is removed, protect its terminals and prevent movement and contact with conductive material. Do not leave a loose battery inside a bicycle carton without an approved packing plan.

Restrain the bicycle inside the package

The bicycle should not shift in a way that changes its orientation, damages the frame or battery, breaks through the package or transfers concentrated load to vulnerable components. Protect the derailleur, display, brake components, forks, motor, battery housing and other exposed parts.

Handlebars, pedals, front wheels or other non-battery parts may be detached to fit the package. Record the final configuration and photographs. Detaching ordinary components for packing does not by itself change the article from a vehicle into equipment.

Use a package suited to the route

Package selection should reflect gross weight, stacking, moisture exposure, handling points and the selected mode. Cartons, crates, pallet bases, corner protection, internal frames and restraint systems should be chosen for the actual bicycle and route rather than copied from a retail display box.

Marks, labels and required information must remain visible and agree with the physical contents and documents.

Disclose abnormal condition

Do not present a crashed, water-exposed, swollen, leaking, overheating, modified or otherwise suspect battery as normal new cargo. Damaged, defective, recalled, used, returned, prototype and recycling shipments require separate disclosure and may need specialist provisions, authority involvement or a different route.

Separate transport acceptance from product-market compliance.

An e-bike can be acceptable for a proposed transport leg and still face destination product, road-use, electrical, consumer-safety, customs or importer requirements.

Transport documents do not prove that the product may legally be sold or used in the destination market. A UN 38.3 test summary is not a product certification. Likewise, a destination product certificate does not replace dangerous-goods classification or shipment preparation.

Before booking, the importer or responsible product party should confirm the destination requirements for the actual e-bike model, electrical system, charger, labeling, intended use and sales channel. BAT Logistics can coordinate the agreed logistics and customs handoffs within its quoted scope, but it does not certify the e-bike for sale or road use.

For battery-related import handoffs, see customs clearance for shipping lithium batteries.

A practical China-origin e-bike shipping workflow

1. Collect the product and battery facts

Record the bike model, battery model, chemistry, rating, installed or removed configuration, spare batteries, condition, quantity and destination.

2. Match the evidence to the physical cargo

Check that the test summary, battery specification, SDS, invoice, packing list and photographs refer to the same models and quantities. Resolve discrepancies before pickup.

3. Define the final packing pattern

Confirm whether the bike is assembled or partly disassembled, where every battery is placed, how terminals and controls are protected, and the final package weights and dimensions.

4. Review classification and mode options

Compare the proposed physical configuration with the current rules for the intended mode. Identify any missing information, approvals or packing work before requesting space.

5. Confirm operating-party acceptance

Check the proposed carrier, airline, shipping line, consolidator, terminal, airport or multimodal handoff for the specific cargo and route. A previous e-bike shipment is useful background but is not automatic acceptance for the next one.

6. Prepare origin and export handoffs

Coordinate factory release, pickup, warehouse handling where required, export documentation, booking, terminal or airport delivery and cutoffs.

7. Coordinate destination customs and delivery

Confirm the importer, customs information, delivery address, appointment, access and unloading needs. Do not assume international-carriage acceptance guarantees customs release or final-site delivery.

What changes e-bike shipping cost and timing?

A reliable quotation cannot be calculated from the number of bicycles alone.

Important variables include:

  • China pickup city and distance to the export point;
  • destination country, port, airport, city and postcode;
  • installed, removed or separately shipped batteries;
  • spare-battery quantity;
  • number of models and packing patterns;
  • package count, gross weight and dimensions;
  • FCL, eligible LCL, air, rail, road or courier availability;
  • dangerous-goods documentation and handling requirements;
  • repacking, palletizing, crating or inspection work;
  • carrier, terminal and transshipment conditions;
  • customs scope, declared value, duties, taxes and destination fees;
  • delivery appointment and unloading requirements; and
  • current capacity, cutoffs, season and operating disruptions.

Published freight rates and transit times are snapshots, not promises. BAT Logistics should provide a shipment-specific indication after the essential product, package and route information has been reviewed.

Match the service to the shipment—not the shipment to a slogan.

These are planning examples, not eligibility decisions. The same quantity can lead to a different service when the battery, package, route or condition changes.

Responsibility map

PartyTypical responsibility
Manufacturer or product ownerAccurate bike and battery identity, rating, configuration, condition, technical records and handling information
Shipper or exporterCorrect declaration, package preparation, marks, labels, transport information and legally assigned tender duties
Packing or technical specialistShipment-specific packaging or engineering work within the contracted scope
BAT LogisticsReview supplied information, identify logistics gaps and coordinate eligible origin, carrier and destination parties within the confirmed quotation
Carrier, terminal or consolidatorCommercial acceptance, operating conditions, equipment, cutoffs and route-specific handling
Importer or consigneeProduct/import eligibility, customs information, duties and taxes, destination charges, receiving access and unloading within the agreed scope

The final quotation should define the actual responsibilities. Do not assume that a supplier, freight forwarder, carrier or importer owns a task merely because that party handled a previous consignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can electric bikes be shipped internationally from China?

Many eligible commercial e-bikes can be shipped internationally when the product and battery are correctly identified, the physical configuration is classified under the current modal rules, the cargo is suitably packed and documented, and the proposed operating parties accept it. The answer depends on the actual bike, battery, condition, package and route.

What UN number applies to an electric bike?

A lithium-ion-powered e-bike transported with its propulsion battery installed is commonly reviewed as UN 3556, Vehicle, lithium ion battery powered under the current international modal framework. Removed batteries, spare batteries, other chemistries and different packing patterns may require other entries. Confirm the complete physical configuration before booking.

Is an e-bike with the battery installed UN 3481?

Do not assume so. Current vehicle provisions specifically include bicycles with a motor and distinguish vehicles from equipment. A complete lithium-ion e-bike with its battery installed is commonly reviewed under UN 3556. UN 3481 applies to lithium-ion batteries packed with or contained in equipment, so it should not be selected simply because the battery powers a product.

What if the e-bike battery is removed for shipping?

The removed battery must be reviewed as a separate physical configuration. Provide photographs showing whether it is inside the same outer package, in separate inner packaging or shipped separately. The applicable battery entry, packing instruction, marks, labels and documents must be confirmed for the selected mode.

Can spare e-bike batteries ship in the same consignment?

Potentially, but spare batteries are not treated as the battery installed in the vehicle. They must be separately identified and prepared under the provisions that apply to their chemistry, condition and packing arrangement. Operator acceptance and quantity or package limits may also apply.

Do e-bike batteries need a UN 38.3 test summary?

Lithium cells and batteries generally must be of a type that has passed the applicable UN 38.3 tests, and the required test summary must be made available by the manufacturer or subsequent distributor. The summary should match the battery design being shipped. It does not by itself guarantee shipment acceptance.

Can electric bikes be shipped by air from China?

Some eligible e-bikes can be considered for air freight when the battery, configuration, state of charge, package, documents, aircraft restrictions, airports and operator conditions are satisfied. Under IATA’s 2026 guidance, lithium-ion-battery-powered vehicles above 100 Wh are subject to the stated reduced state-of-charge or indicated-capacity requirement unless the applicable approval pathway is used.

Is sea freight suitable for commercial e-bike orders?

Sea freight is often assessed for larger or heavier commercial orders. The choice between FCL and eligible LCL depends on volume, package, carrier or consolidator policy, route, dangerous-goods acceptance, securing and destination handling—not quantity alone.

Can used or returned e-bikes ship like new products?

Not automatically. Used or returned status should be disclosed together with battery condition, damage or repair history and the reason for return. Damaged, defective or recalled batteries can require substantially different treatment and may not be eligible for the proposed service.

Does BAT Logistics certify or classify the e-bike?

BAT Logistics can review customer- and manufacturer-supplied information for logistics planning, identify missing inputs and coordinate with eligible operating parties. BAT does not perform UN testing, issue a UN 38.3 test summary, certify the product for a destination market or replace the manufacturer, shipper, packing party, carrier, importer or competent authority.

How long does it take to ship electric bikes from China?

Timing depends on product readiness, document and packing review, carrier acceptance, origin handling, selected mode, export point, capacity, transshipment, customs, destination handling and final delivery. Request a route-specific estimate after the shipment facts are complete.

How do I get an accurate e-bike shipping quote?

Send the bike and battery models, battery rating and configuration, quantity, package count, weights, dimensions, packing photographs, available technical documents, China pickup location, destination postcode and cargo-ready date. A quotation based only on product count will remain provisional.
