Shipping from China to Germany

Compare the full route—not only the main-carriage price. Plan the mode, gateway, customs handoff and final delivery around the shipment.

ModesSea / air / rail / express
German gatewaysHamburg / Bremerhaven / Frankfurt / Duisburg
Route logic / 01

Build the route around the cargo—not the other way around.

Start with four practical questions.

What exactly is being shipped, and is it regulated or carrier-restricted?
Where is the cargo ready in China?
Where must it be handed over in Germany?
Who handles import clearance, duty, VAT and final delivery?
China originsShanghai/Ningbo, Shenzhen/Guangzhou, Qingdao/Tianjin and connected supplier locations.
German gatewaysHamburg, Bremerhaven, Frankfurt and Duisburg or other eligible inland terminals.
Cargo fitCommercial cargo, machinery, components, batteries and battery-powered products—subject to acceptance.
Mode choice / 02

Five ways to structure a China–Germany shipment.

Compare cargo, urgency, quantity, handling exposure, customs plan and final handoff.

01 / OCEAN

Sea freight — FCL or LCL

Often practical for larger, heavier or less time-sensitive cargo. FCL suits container-scale volume; LCL can suit smaller compatible shipments with added consolidation handling.

AssessPorts, equipment, transshipment, DG conditions, port charges and inland delivery.

02 / AIR

Air freight

Useful for urgent, high-value or production-critical cargo when goods, packing and operator rules allow acceptance.

AssessChargeable weight, dimensions, battery configuration, screening and handoffs.

03 / RAIL

Rail freight

An intermediate option for selected routings when sea is too slow and air is not commercially suitable.

AssessTerminal pair, restrictions, schedule, transit conditions and trucking.

04 / EXPRESS

Express and courier

For eligible smaller shipments. Battery-only cargo, power banks and some powered products can face extra restrictions.

AssessEligibility, watt-hour/configuration, limits, remote area and importer readiness.

05 / DOOR

Door delivery

Door delivery is a scope, not a mode. Define who acts as importer, who pays duty/VAT and which origin, customs and destination handoffs are included.

Gateway map / 03

Connect the supplier to the right German gateway.

China origin

Yangtze Delta

Shanghai and Ningbo for ocean; Shanghai Pudong for air.

Pearl River Delta

Shenzhen and Guangzhou pickup with South China options.

North / East

Qingdao, Tianjin and nearby consolidation points.

Inland suppliers

Pickup before an accepted export gateway.

Germany destination

Hamburg

Ocean gateway with liner and hinterland connections.

Bremerhaven

Container-focused seaport with strong rail links.

Frankfurt

European air-cargo hub for time-sensitive freight.

Duisburg

Inland intermodal hub for selected China–Europe rail flows.

The named gateway is not automatically the final delivery point. Define terminal handoff, customs responsibility, storage exposure and the final postcode.

Planning range / 04

Use a working range, then confirm the actual service.

ModeIndicative working rangeRange basis
ExpressAbout 3–7 working daysEligible cargo, pickup through delivery
Air freightAbout 5–10 calendar daysAccepted cargo, handling and normal handoffs
Rail freightAbout 14–24 daysTerminal-to-terminal before final delivery
Sea freightAbout 25–45 daysPort-to-port before customs and inland delivery

Planning note: Discussion ranges—not schedules or guarantees. Confirm the current end-to-end service for the exact cargo.

Quotation anatomy / 05

Battery specialist module / 06

Battery freight needs two separate checks: transport and market entry.

Review starts with the actual battery and packing: specification, UN number where known, watt-hour rating, configuration, supplied UN38.3 information, MSDS/SDS, photographs, quantities, weight and dimensions.

Rules depend on configuration, mode, operator and route. Current IMDG conditions apply to sea; current IATA/operator conditions apply to air. Separately, EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 creates product and market obligations.

BAT reviews and coordinates

Supplied shipment information, missing inputs and operating parties.

BAT does not issue or guarantee

UN38.3 testing, MSDS/SDS creation, laboratory certification, carrier acceptance or customs clearance.

Operating handoffs / 07

Six handoffs from enquiry to delivery.

01

Shipment facts

Cargo, packing, origin, destination, Incoterm, date and documents.

02

Information review

Check whether the inputs support route assessment.

03

Mode and gateway

Compare options around the cargo and handoff.

04

Operating acceptance

Check space, equipment, operator and DG conditions.

05

Export coordination

Align pickup, warehouse, declaration and carriage.

06

German handoff

Complete arrival, customs, duty/VAT and delivery by named parties.

An EORI number is required for EU customs operations. Confirm the responsible importer or representative before booking.

Why BAT Logistics / 09

One route desk across the China and Germany handoffs.

The value is knowing which facts must be confirmed before cargo moves.

BAT focuses on China-origin coordination, shipment-information review, mode and gateway comparison, supplier/warehouse/carrier communication and defined destination handoffs.

Destination FAQ / 10

Questions before you book.

What is the best way to ship from China to Germany?

It depends on cargo, urgency, size, handling and destination. Compare the complete handoff, not only main-carriage cost.

Which German port should I use?

Hamburg and Bremerhaven are principal container gateways; the better option depends on origin, service, acceptance, inland destination and scope.

Can BAT arrange door delivery in Germany?

Eligible door delivery can be assessed. Share postcode, unloading conditions, importer/customs arrangement and Incoterm.

Do I need an EORI number?

An EORI number is required for EU customs operations. The responsible party depends on the importer and declaration arrangement.

How are German duty and VAT calculated?

Duty depends on classification, value, origin and measures. Germany’s standard import VAT rate is generally 19%; confirm exact treatment with a qualified customs party.

Can lithium batteries ship from China to Germany?

Some shipments can move when product, configuration, packing, information, route and operator conditions are acceptable.

Does BAT provide UN38.3 or MSDS/SDS?

No. BAT reviews supplied information and identifies missing inputs. BAT does not issue/test UN38.3, create MSDS/SDS or guarantee acceptance.

How long does shipping take?

Express and air are discussed in days, rail in weeks and ocean in several weeks. Confirm the current service for the exact cargo.

What details do you need for a quote?

Send origin, destination, cargo, classification, packing, weight, dimensions/CBM, Incoterm, documents and ready date.

Germany route enquiry / 11

Request a shipment-specific route plan.

Send the cargo, origin, destination, packing, quantity, weight, dimensions, Incoterm, available documents and ready date.

BAT will review the shipment facts before discussing mode, gateway, scope and quotation.
